Amy’s Tin Tabernacle
Amy Carmichael and The Welcome
This book chronicles the early life and ministry of Amy Carmichael before she left Northern Ireland for India. Prompted by her vision for the needs of the underprivileged, her passion to serve her Saviour and her faith in God’s unfailing promises, while she was yet a teenager, Amy embarked on a daring mission to do something for God and her community. Her early work made a great impact on scores of people then and in this twenty-first century it is still influencing many today. The book also tells the story of the work and witness of The Welcome Hall during the one hundred years that followed after Amy first got a vision for this work. The story is moving, challenging, humourous, evangelistic and another great reason to praise to God.

This remarkable story of ‘The Welcome’ cannot fail to cause its readers to stop and praise the Sovereign Lord for all His power and grace at work there over the past 125 years. The narrative sets the scene of life in Northern Ireland over the years and provides a helpful background to the continuing life and work of ‘The Welcome’. As a ‘sister fellowship’ – having the same founder, Amy Carmichael, we should like to express our joy and thanks to the Lord for the 125 years of witness given by those associated with ‘Amy’s Tin Tabernacle’. On behalf of The Dohnavur Fellowship, I warmly welcome this book with its powerful testimony to the work Amy Carmichael began so long ago.

Amy Wilson Carmichael was the eldest daughter of a large Christ-centered family in Millisle, Ireland. She was impressed at an early age that “nothing is important but that which is eternal.” This understanding proved to be a foundation for her service to the Lord, which began among the mill workers of Ireland while she was still in her teen years. Moving to England in 1889, Amy ministered to women in the Manchester slums and also became involved with the Keswick Convention. During these years “came a word I could not escape and dared not resist”—and in 1892, Amy became Keswick’s first missionary appointee. Although leaving her family was painful, she followed God’s call and served briefly in Japan and then in Ceylon, finally settling in India where she began her ministry to children in 1895. The Dohnavur Fellowship, the family that developed from her work, was devoted to saving children from lives of temple service. Amy wrote over thirty biographical and devotional books, many of which are considered classics. Injured and bedridden for the last twenty years of her life, she remained in India until her death.
Amy Carmichael of Dohnavur
Amy Carmichael, was born in 1867 in the village of Millisle, Ireland, and gave herself unconditionally to Christ. She went first to Japan but was told she could not withstand the climate. Following a short term in Ceylon, presently Sri Lanka, she landed in India in 1895 and remained there without a single furlough until she died on January 18, 1951. Her selfless life and service is an inspiration to anyone interested in Christian missions.
Rose from Brier
Amy was inspired to write this book by reflecting that most books of comfort for sick people are written by the well and so miss their mark. Thus, from her own personal experiences, she has gathered a priceless treasury of helpful thoughts for those who are ill.

DVD – Mother to the Motherless
In 1903 Amy Carmichael risked her missionary support and shocked the Christian community with the publication of her book Things As They Are. Unlike many before her, Amy refused to sugarcoat her experience as a missionary in India. She wanted her readers to get an accurate picture of the desperate plight of some of the Indian people as well as the tremendous challenges that missionaries were facing. However, Amy's most shocking revelation was the plight of the temple girls, who were doomed to a life of abuse as they were "married" to the gods of the land.
Amy Carmichael's heroic life of service has inspired countless others to sacrificially spread the Gospel, while caring for people in need. Learn more of her amazing story through this in-depth look at her life and ministry. Follow Amy's story from her childhood experiences with prayer through her years of faithful ministry and on to the establishment of The Dohnavur Fellowship, an organization which continues to serve the India Amy loved.
This features Elisabeth Elliot, who counts Amy as a crucial influence in her own decision to become a missionary. This presentation also features:
Jonathan Clarke, pastor of The Welcome Church, established by Amy in Belfast

Dr. Nancy Robbins, who nursed Amy during her dying years.
